Season 5 of The Mentalist premiered on CBS, on September 30th for its 5th season. The Mentalist follows the life of former circus “psychic” and con man Patrick Jane who teams up with the California Bureau of Investigation to catch the killer known as “Red John” after he murdered Jane’s wife and young daughter. The Mentalist first premiered in 2009 and won the “Best New TV Drama” award at The People’s Choice Awards that year. Last season ended with Patrick Jane coming even closer to discovering “Red John’s” identity and then leaving the audience with another twist.

The premiere of The Mentalist made me wonder what it would be like if Patrick Jane was a character on some other TV shows. So here’s a list of some of the ways the plots of my favorite shows would be altered if there was a mind reader in the cast:

What If A Mind Reader Was Added To Your Favorite Show?

  • •  The Office: The Jim/Pam romance would not have been nearly as titillating with a little psychic guidance.
  • •  Dexter: Dexter would have ended ten minutes into the first episode of season one with Patrick Jane saying, “Hey, everybody. This guy’s a serial killer. Arrest him. Okay, thanks.”
  • •  Breaking Bad: Imagine Patrick Jane sidling up to Hank and saying, “Hey, you’re with the DEA right? Guess what your brother-in-law Walt has been making in the back of a Winnebago in the desert?”
  • •  Medium: I just picture Patrick Jane and Allison DuBois walking past each other really casually and giving each other the ‘sup head nod.
  • •  Lost: Everyone’s shady backstories would never have stayed as concealed as they did.
  • •  Grey’s Anatomy: I think the events with Meredith and Derek would have played out a little differently if Patrick Jane had been sitting next to McDreamy that night they met in the bar yelling, “He’s married!”
