4 Places That Have a Public Eating Ban

food ban

What is more iconic of Rome than pizza? Or gelato? Yet Rome’s city council has recently enacted a new ordinance – a public eating ban that forbids people from snacking in many historic locations, such as the Piazza Navona.  So you’ll now have to enjoy your pizza away from the Piazza.  Lawbreakers can face fines of up to 500 euro, more than $600 USD.

This raises the question: what other tourist destinations have also enacted an eating ban? Where will your public snacking raise eyebrows, and where will it exact fees and awkward conversations with the police? Be prepared before you go. Here are 3 other places that have also enacted public eating bans or are threatening to.

4 Places That Have A Public Eating Ban

Public Eating Ban #1 – New York Subway

Don’t snack on the subway.  Lawmakers in Albany have been tossing around a bill to ban eating on the subway. The reason? Crumbs and leftovers attract rats, a perennial problem in New York City.  While the public eating ban hasn’t yet passed, keep an eye out in case it does.

Public Eating Ban #2 – Florence Historial Monument

Another entry from Italy, Florence has also passed a public eating ban around historical monuments. What is Italy afraid of, that public eating will cause civilization to literally crumble around them?

Public Eating Ban #3- Venice

Rounding out the list with yet another Italian city, Venice has joined the club in banning public snacking.  Perhaps they’re trying to keep the canals clean.  In any case, it has cut down on the number of people enjoying their snacks on the streets.
