For a book about the Middle East, you can’t go wrong with Anthony Swofford’s 2003 memoir Jarhead. In the book, Jarhead and his fellow marines watch classic war movies like Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter. DeNiros Game by Rawi Hage is a similarly bleak, grim, and flat story, but with a nihilist twist.
