0Five Great Choices To Direct Star Wars: Episode VII
By Dale Lavine
Earlier, we discussed directors that have been rumored to be brought onboard to direct the next ‘Star Wars’ film. This time, we’re examining directors that would actually fit that role – because Quentin Tarantino…well, with films like ‘Pulp Fiction’ and ‘Kill Bill’, his portfolio doesn’t exactly match up to what ‘Star Wars’ fans might want. So who would be a good fit to handle the future of the Star Wars franchise?
- Brad Bird – The man frequently holds storyline above all else in his films (‘Ratatouille’, ‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’), and generally gives audiences what they want and expect. There’s no doubt that Bird could balance the plot of the next ‘Star Wars’ with the same amounts of humor and seriousness that George Lucas gave the series beforehand.
- J.J. Abrams – If you’re looking for secrecy and lots of lens flare, Abrams is your man. He’s the guy that took ‘Star Trek’and opened it up for a wider audience; one newer and much younger than ever before. His ability to cast actors that fit in with scripts seamlessly is uncanny, and Abrams is well-known for his taste of science fiction.
- Jon Favreau– The only director that has actually considered directing the next ‘Star Wars’ film (as far as we know), Favreau has vast connections with Disney due to his past with the ‘Iron Man’ movies. Seeing as how Disney now owns Lucasfilm, it seems reasonable that they would choose a familiar, successful face to bring a fresh, brilliant take on the franchise.
- Ron Howard – Howard has a history of directing big, critically acclaimed films. If he could hang onto the sci-fi realm of ‘Star Wars’ while infusing it with his award-winning style, it stands to reason that ‘Episode VII’could be the first ‘Star Wars’ film that’s loved by fans and critics alike since the start of the century.
- George Lucas – Sure, he’s said he’s handing off the chair to a new generation – and it’s commendable that he’s donating all of the $4.5 billion dollars he made out of selling Lucasfilm to furthering education. But really, is there a better man to direct the next ‘Star Wars’ than the man that created the entire universe the films are based in? Could anyone else really do it justice? And how great would it be to see Lucas turn his chair around, cloaked in black like Emperor Palpatine of old and say “Action!” once more? Search your heart…you know it to be true.
