The last time anyone saw a new Godzilla movie, the year was 2004 – and unless you lived in Japan, or unless you were a hardcore Godzilla enthusiast, you probably didn’t even see that latest film.

For the majority of Americans, the last time we saw the giant radioactive lizard was in 1998 in the movie ‘Godzilla’. The movie incorporated actors like Jean Reno (The Da Vinci Code) and Matthew Broderick (Inspector Gadget), Hank Azaria (The Simpsons) and Kevin Dunn (Transformers). While raking in a fair sum of money, the movie was widely panned – with many critics saying the movie relied solely on special effects, a shame due to the talented cast at hand.

But now a decade and a half has passed since then (which makes me feel old, but hey – that’s life), and the world is looking at a new era of Godzilla movies. Gareth Edwards, the man behind the independent sci-fi film Monsters, is attached to direct. He recently spoke with Total Film (via Coventry Telegraph) of the project, saying

“I’ve always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him. I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine ‘If this really happened, what would it be like?’ I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film.”

Realistic? Grounded? These aren’t exactly words that would come to mind when speaking of a film about a giant lizard fighting a giant moth (of many enemies Godzilla took down). That said, Godzilla was a character based off the very real dangers of radioactive fallout from hydrogen bomb explosions – so perhaps he was speaking from that matter.

Nevertheless, Edwards is certainly aiming for a higher mark than the last American Godzilla film shot for. Already, fans have been teased with the new Godzilla’s roar everything has thus far been generally well received. As for the film itself? Well, it plans to open up May 16th, 2014.
