‘Wanted 2’ To Be The Same Film As The First, But With Role Reversal

By Dale Lavine

The upcoming sequel to fan favorite film ‘Wanted’ recently got an update from screenwriter Derek Haas (who previously helped helm the first Wanted movie), saying that he has officially been brought back onboard to write the sequel’s script.

The script of “Wanted 2”, he says, will feature a sort of role reversal from the first film. A quick rundown for those who are not familiar with said film- the lead male character, Wesley (James McAvoy) is picked up and trained by smoldering assassin Fox (Angelina Jolie). Spoiler alert: She dies in the end.

Haas said, in discussion with Hollywood.com,

“The only thing I can tell you is that Wesley is now, four years later, recruiting a young woman who is in his situation in the first movie. She’s got a sh**ty life. He’s sort of in the Fox role. This new girl is brought into the world,”

Where Angelina Jolie took McAvoy under her wing in the first film, McAvoy will now be doing the same with a different female lead. It leads readers to wonder, though, are we going to get the same ‘Wanted’ hashed out will different leads? Lots of shooting, training, and more shooting?

It would seem boring if that were the case, and though the sheer excitement of a sequel might bring in big box office numbers, would it leave the audience fulfilled enough to make a third film? His statement, regarding the new girl’s lifestyle, echoes that of the plot of the first Wanted, almost exactly. Where’s the new?

Hopefully they aren’t planning on hashing out the same ‘Wanted’ plot to carry the sequel, which has always had a rocky foundation. In 2011, producer Jim Lemley said that the film may not happen anytime soon, if at all. It wasn’t until McAvoy himself said the studio was trying to move forward with the project when things actually started moving forward with the project.

For now, though, the people can only express their desire for a film separate of the first – a film that doesn’t rely on the same structure, simply with roles reversed. Until then, it’s all a load of speculation.
