1Warner Bros. Justice League Movie Competes With The Avengers Sequel
Coming off the success of The Avengers, Warner Bros. has decided to roll out its version of a superhero culmination film – The Justice League — around the same time the sequel to Marvel’s smash hit is expected to be released.
Is imitation really the highest form of flattery, or is Warner Bros. simply trying to rake in the same amount of cash as The Avengers did beforehand? The latter would seem to be the case, as the Justice League film has had absolutely no build-up whatsoever to prepare (or re-prepare) the franchise for such a film. Where Marvel took years to build up towards the climax that was The Avengers, Warner Bros. and DC are planning on creating individual films after the fact.
Creating separate franchise for each character after making an all-star film bringing them together? What?
It could work, I suppose, but the Justice League film would have to literally blow the sequel to The Avengers out of the water. Aside from that issue, there lies another: What about casting? There has been no word on who would be playing what part, and a planned 2015 release would mean production on a project this size would need to start within the next year and a half. Where’s the script? There has been absolutely no word on that front either. Although Ben Affleck was apparently offered the role of director, his team has since stated he was not going to participate in the production of the film. Now the studio is looking at Zack Snyder or Brett Ratner (among others) to helm the film.
What about the individual films themselves? Chris Nolan’s Batman has since retired, and the new Superman movie Man of Steel is set for a 2013 release. There has been no word yet as to whether or not Henry Cavill would be willing to reprise his roll for the Justice League movie either.
It seems as though Warner Bros. is charging into a project this size relatively unprepared. No script, no director, no ideas as to who will be playing who. All the company has is a release date, and the hopes that whatever they put out might give The Avengers’ sequel a run for its money.
